ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
The vision of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul "is to embrace the world in a network of charity." Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, and patron, St. Vincent de Paul.
Do you need food, clothing, shelter, or financial assistance? Contact the Parish Office at (734) 981-1333 and ask to leave a message for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. A Vincentian will get back to you very quickly to determine the best way to meet your needs. In addition to providing food, clothing, and other assistance, Vincentians can direct people to a network of community resources that may assist them. You may also download the resources for free and reduced cost health care prepared by our Parish Nurses or visit the DTE Energy Payment Assistance page. You may also want to download information about obtaining low-cost insurance for children.
How can you support the work of St. Vincent de Paul?
After each Mass, you will notice Vincentians holding top hats in the Gathering Space. The money placed into these top hats is used to fund the work of the Vincentians. In addition to supporting parishioners in need, the Vincentians support three parishes in Detroit: St. Dominic, St. Patrick and St. Benedict, as well as area food banks.
SVDP Clothing Drop Box: St. Vincent de Paul has a brand new, bright blue box where you can drop-off used clothing and shoes. The box is in the corner of the South parking lot. This will give you an opportunity to bring things, at your convenience, and drop them into this box. The box will be emptied on a regular basis by SVDP and the contents will be used to help others.
Little Red Wagons: In the Gathering Space, we have two little red wagons. Please leave non-perishable food, paper products, soap or personal care products. We use these to prepare emergency food packets for people in need in our community and deliver the extra collected to the St. Mary's food bank.
Please DO NOT leave household items for St. Vincent de Paul anywhere in the church or outside. We do collect food in the wagons, and shoes and clothing in the new bins outside. Anything else you may want to donate needs to be brought to the SVDP store in Westland on Wayne road, between Ford and Warren roads. We appreciate your cooperation.
Can I donate paper products, soap or personal care products?
Yes! If you have some of those samples from traveling, please donate them to our little red wagons in the gathering area. If you are shopping and see a great sale, you would be adding to the quality of someone’s life if you bought one extra to donate. You will not be present when a parent feels great relief that they can help their child to be like the rest of the kids – clean and groomed. Your reward will be in knowing that you have done your best to lift up the least among us. God bless you.
Who are the members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?
Our members represent a great variety of people. Some are retired. Others are raising a young family. Some are empty nesters. Others have adult or near-adult children living at home. We are blue collar, white collar, homemakers, and sometimes unemployed. We are a lot like all of our parishioners. We are at weekend liturgies and we blend into the congregation. We, like you, are trying to live out the Gospel message to go forth and bring the love of God to others.
We feel that we receive more than we give. Whenever we visit someone in their home, we ask if we can pray with them. We have never been refused. It is usually the most touching part of our visits with clients. Hugs, and even tears, are not unusual.
If you are looking for something that will allow you to see God working in your life, we are the group for you. Prayer is such an important part of all we do. Our goal is always to see the face of Jesus in those we serve. If you think, ‘maybe,’ why not check us out? We meet at 7:30 PM on the first Thursday of the month. No cost. No obligation.
Would you like to join the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?
The Vincentians are always looking for new members. Do you feel a special calling to offer person-to-person service? Leave your contact information in the Parish Office. A representative from St. Vincent de Paul will contact you.
SVDP meets the first Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. You may also speak with one of the Vincentians holding the top hats after Mass.
