THE HAITI JOURNAL
The following is the day-to-day journal of our former pastor, Fr. Patrick Casey, sharing his experience in Haiti after the devastating earthquake that struck the country in 2010.
Friday, 5 February 2010 - Leaving for Haiti
I left for vacation on Sunday with my brother Joe, driving down to Florida. I had gotten word out two days after the earthquake that I would be willing to donate my vacation time to Haiti. I even offered that I didn’t have to be the priest—if they needed a strong back and a weak mind, I could be their man!
On Sunday, just as I was preparing to leave for Florida, I received an email to offer pastoral care at Sacre Couer Hospital in Milot, located in the north end of the island. I arrived to Ft. Myers beach Monday morning, and made a few inquiries, and decided to forge ahead, making arrangements to leave today, to arrive to the hospital tomorrow. I know I am rushing into this without thinking about little things like vaccinations and whatnot, but what the heck!
